Frances Mayes (Diane Lane) who is a writer in San Francisco finds out that her husband is having an extra marital affair. Emotionally disturbed by her divorce ,she gets a writer’s block.
Encouraged by her friend Patti, she travels to Tuscany for a change and buys a beautiful but run down villa on a whim.
She believes that this house will change things for her and immerses herself into her new home and surroundings.
Frances hosts the wedding of her neighbor’s daughter in her villa and Patti delivers her daughter there too. This birth and union gives her hope that the Tuscan sun is beginning to rise in her horizon.
